Every major streaming service normalizes playback to a target loudness in LUFS, then turns your track up or down to match. Master hotter than the target and the platform just turns you down, so you lose dynamics and gain nothing. These are the integrated LUFS targets and the recommended true-peak ceiling.
Two different numbers decide whether your master travels well. Integrated LUFS is perceived loudness averaged over the whole track, and it is what platforms normalize. True peak is the highest instantaneous level, including inter-sample peaks that appear after conversion, and it is what causes clipping and distortion. You want your LUFS near the platform target and your true peak at or below -1 dBTP.

The rule of thumb: aim for roughly -14 to -9 LUFS integrated with a true peak at or below -1 dBTP, then let each platform's normalization handle the rest. Chasing maximum loudness stopped helping the day streaming turned normalization on by default.
This checker measures gated integrated loudness (ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 style, K-weighted) and an oversampled true-peak estimate, entirely in your browser. Treat it as a close estimate, within about 1 LU of a reference meter for most masters, not a mastering-grade replacement.
