01 / PER PLATFORM

The same rent, on every platform

Because each platform pays a different rate per stream, the number of streams you need to cover the same rent swings wildly. The lower a platform pays, the more streams you need. Here is how many streams a month your target takes on each service, updated live from the numbers above.

02 / CITIES

Streams to make rent, city by city

Rent is the single biggest lever on how many streams you need. Making rent in New York or Los Angeles takes two to three times the streams it takes in Austin or the average US city. These are the monthly Spotify streams to cover an average one-bedroom in each.

The honest math: to cover the average US one-bedroom rent (about $1,600 a month), you need roughly 400,000 Spotify streams every single month, or about 13,000 a day, forever. That is the number no streaming pitch ever shows you.

03 / MILESTONES

How many streams to hit each milestone?

At Spotify's roughly $0.004 per stream, every income milestone maps to a monthly stream count that has to repeat, month after month. These assume Spotify's blended rate; higher-paying platforms need proportionally fewer.

Common questions

How many streams does it take to make minimum wage?+
At Spotify's roughly $0.004 per stream, a full-time minimum-wage income of about $2,000 a month takes around 500,000 streams every month. On Apple Music (about $0.008 per stream) it is closer to 250,000 streams a month. The number has to repeat every month, it does not carry over.
How many Spotify streams to pay rent?+
To cover an average US one-bedroom rent of about $1,600 a month, you need roughly 400,000 Spotify streams every month at $0.004 per stream. High-cost cities like New York or Los Angeles require two to three times that, every month.
Can you make a living from streaming alone?+
For most independent artists the stream counts required to live on streaming alone are enormous and must repeat every month. This is why touring, merch, sync licensing, and direct fan support usually make up the majority of a working musician's income, not streaming royalties. Owning your masters and selling directly to fans changes the math the most.
